You get new player opponents, referred to as Blackguard mercenaries in game, when exploring the map and as occasional invasions on your map. Your opponents are selected by a matchmaking process that attempts to give you the right level of challenge.

Your opponents are selected from players with a similar matchmaking score. Every time you get a new Mercenary base on your map, either through exploration or invasion, your matchmaking score increases. Using 'Find new opponent', Headquarters level, experience level or Victory Points have no effect on your matchmaking score.

Matchmaking score will gradually decrease over time if you have several player opponents on your map. Therefore, if you are regularly matched with opponents you cannot beat, you will eventually get easier opponents. Only active players' matchmaking score is adjusted down, so leaving the game for a long period of time won't result in the game getting too easy.

Here is an I depth explanation into how the matchmaking works

    • This new matchmaking is messed up.

They matched me up with a lvl 24, (Mind that i'm only lvl 10 as of now).

I feel like we shouldn't be matched with medals, but the levels as I can never raid another mercenary base without wasting alot of troops/

Same thing for me, I'm playing for one week now, I had a lot fun at first but now I'm lvl17 and only matchmaked with some 24+ and it's impossible to beat them with my troops now!

And as the ressources are hard to get from the IA bases, I'm can't really upgrade my buildings... And when I'm getting the ressources needed someone attack me with the troops of a HQ 3 or 4 higher than mine, my defenses are useless and i can only see my ressources disappear...

I'm not saying, that the matchmaking wouldn't have to be on VP's but maybe with some moderation with the level and/or HQ, like a limit between both levels or both HQ!

      (Sorry for my english)

Yes, exactly. They matched me up with more 20+...

This is getting more frustating and harder.

    • Always make sure your Vault, Sculptor, and offensive units (e.g. Landing Crafts and whatever troops you use) are maxed out in your Armory before upgrading defenses.

This game is extremely oriented towards offensive gameplay. A few weeks ago, the top player on the leaderboards had maxed-out offense and a single level 1 Sniper Tower.

You should raid in batches. Do not raid sporadically throughout the day. Pick a time of the day when you don't have any upgrades in progress (or just before an upgrade is about to finish), and clear as many NPC and PvP bases as you can. When you're finished, start upgrading something that will improve your offense (see above) and will use almost all of the resources you have. When you get raided, you won't lose many resources as long as your Vault is the highest level available to you.

The crappy VP matchmaking process prevents me from doing this.

I'm only a lvl 10, and my whole archipelago map is filled with lvl 24 mercanies with decent defenses. I can't get past them without wasting my coins on training troops, and then the game gives me a chance to find another opponent.

    • This is a very old thread. How old? That post of mine was my very first edit here.

Anyway, the first post is an explanation of the old matchmaking system. Please visit the Matchmaking page for the up to date information.

    • Are your troops and Landing Crafts maxed out? If not, how far behind are they?

    • Do not upgrade your radar too quickly and focus on building your base and resources first. Practice on the black guard. Update your radar once every couple of weeks

    • This game is designed to be played over time. Make your island stronger by building your economy. Make gold for upgrading your troops. Wood, stone and iron for your weapons. Rule 1.... Always build your economy. Rule 2... Always build your economy.... Only Go on raids when you need more resources. this will help keep your vp points from growing faster than your economy. Play the game like chess. Otherwise you spend more real cash building your economy with diamonds and get frustrated by being matched with higher ranked opponents.
